Outside Jodhpur is Chandelao, a peaceful village of farmers growing grains and raising livestock in a countryside rich with history. Amidst this idyllic setting is Sunder Rang, which means “beautiful colors” in Hindi. Rajasthan is a region well known for its diversity of colorful handicrafts, from embroidery and pottery to block printing and weaving. With modern technology, there is more competition and less appreciation for such beautiful, handmade crafts.
The Basecamp Foundation of Norway partnered with Chandelao Vikas Sansthan (Chandelao Development Organization) to start Sunder Rang Crafts Center in 2007. Together, they created this inspiring new organization to give the women artists of Rajasthan an opportunity to sell their crafts. Not only are these women able to support themselves, they are also training their next generation and preserving their culture.
We will spend an afternoon with the women of Sunder Rang, learning to make a traditional Rajasthani craft with their guidance. And, of course, we will shop their beautifully embroidered and embellished fabrics. Though we will have a memento made with our own hands, it would be a shame to leave without something made by these entrepreneurs—at least a new scarf, bag or pillow. You will know proceeds go to a great cause because you will experience it for yourself.
