2013 Highlights: Runner-up Flight of the Year

So, yesterday in my reflections of 2013 I listed all the places that I have traveled to this year and picked the best plane flight. Plane flights are normally not that exciting but I have to say flying over the North Pole, Siberia and Mongolia was unique and very special to me.

There was one other flight that was very special as well and that was a flight that I took from Yogyakarta in Central Java to Denpasar, Bali.

Travel Tip
If you ever visit Indonesia, which I strongly suggest you do, it's amazing, then here's a travel tip keep this in mind. The flight heads east after leaving Yogyakarta and makes its way over eastern Java. Make sure to sit on the left side of the plane and if you are a photographer take the morning flight out so that there is good light for photos. There is a couple of flights that leave before 8am on Air Asia (for as low as USD27). Get these. The lighting is great. The views of fields of volcanoes that you get as you approach the very eastern side of Central Java is breath taking and well worth the planning.

Here a few photos from my morning flight this year.

Amazing views of volcanoes for about 15 minutes of the flight.

Leave a comment. Let me know what you think. I'll share soon some tips on how to get good photos from a plane.

This is not my video but I wanted to share it as it shows Mount Bromo in eastern Java and it is one of the most beautiful time-lapse videos I have ever seen. It was filmed between 26 May 2012 and 6 June 2012 by Justin Ng.
