The state of Rajasthan in northwestern India is one of my favorite places in India for photography. The brown unimposing desert like landscape throughout most of the state sets a perfect background to photograph the Rajasthani people who wed color and fabric in a way no one else does in India.
In late October I’ll be taking a group on a meditation retreat to northwestern India. It’s a spiritual adventure and the perfect opportunity for those of you who would enjoy a meditation retreat and the chance to photograph in India as well. We’ll be attending two large festivals – Diwali, the Festival of Lights at the famed Golden Temple in Amritsar and the Pushkar Camel Fair among other exciting places and adventures. The opportunity to photograph at both these festivals is a rare one as it is not often easy to time being at both of them on the same trip.

Day 1: Today's photograph was taken just outside the village of Chandelao during my visit there in late April of this year. Chandelao village is situated just 40 kms from Jodhpur city on the edge of the Great Thar Desert. On a drive with a local friend he took me to meet this man who had a pottery business. It was fairly early in the morning. The lighting was good, coming in from the side of his shed lighting part of his face as he sat there pounding away at the pots. I love this photo for the strong presence of gray in it in contrast with the fluorescent fuchsia and turquoise colored wall plus he had a strong sense of calmness as he went about his work.
