The Colored Sand Makers of Tamil Nadu

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of my photography posts. As many of you know I am passionate about photography. During a recent trip to South India in December last year I drove past a small village in Tamil Nadu, South India, where it looked like the main industry here was making colored sand. Most of the colored sand was exported to various parts of India primarily for creating rangolis. Rangoli is an Indian art form of creating gorgeous patterns on the floor inside and outside of homes and buildings. Various types of ingredients are used to create rangolis such as colored rice, colored sand, flower petals and more.

It looks like in this village they mastered the art of creating colored sand. Enjoy the photos! If video is not showing below watch it here.

The colors are mixed thoroughly into the sand by hand.

Final products which were displayed along the road. Most of the products were placed into large sacks which were then exported.
