Thaipusam Festival at Batu Caves

We were fortunate to attend the Thaipusam festival held at Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur on February 7th. It’s a Hindu festival dedicated to god Muruga and is held once a year during the Tamil month of Thai. Before some pilgrims begin the journey up the stairs to the cave they bathe by the river as part of the preparation.
Some have been preparing for 40 days or more for this festival performing spiritual practices during this time.
Part of the spiritual practices on the day is to carry pots of milk to the cave which are then offered to god Muruga.
As part of the preparation some pilgrims shave their head. Once this is done sandal paste is applied over the head as part of the ceremony.
