Exploring antique stores in Pondicherry

Exploring antique stores in Pondicherry

We drove down to Pondicherry from Mamallapuram along the east coast road which took about 2 hours. Just outside Pondicherry town, about 5kms or so, there are a bunch of great antique stores. We stopped to explore them. We found many interesting pieces including a massive wooden elephant on a platform with wheels.

Markley and I are especially interested in Indian antiques and had fun digging our way to the back of some stores discovering all sorts of wonderful items. We knew that nobody had been in this part of the store as we had to clear cobwebs to get to the back of the store.

We also came across this beautiful Ganesha statue carved out of wood and covered in years of dust. The design was very different than what you commonly find these days in stores. The common one tend to be rectangular in shape but this one had a carved out arch which is traditional and I personally have not seen such a design in my exploration of this style of art here in India.
