Control your Compassion

Compassion is a quality worth nurturing, but wisdom means recognizing that not everyone wants to be helped—and respecting their choice.

Two figures sit together on a sunlit hillside, one offering an open, patient hand as warm light surrounds them.

Often we feel the need to help someone especially if they are someone we care about or love. That is a good feeling to have and a good feeling to nurture within. We certainly want to cultivate this quality but what is important to cultivate alongside this quality is the ability to wisely discriminate if someone wants to be helped or not.

It is important to realize that not everyone wants to be helped. If they don’t want to be helped then we have to respect their choice. What do we do at this point? We learn to control our compassion.

Not everyone wants to be helped. It’s not your job to save them. Learn to control your compassion.

It’s not an easy thing to do especially if the person we want to help is someone that we love very much. Respect their boundaries which are often unspoken.

You can let them know that you are there, available to serve and assist at any time, should they require that.
