Why You Feel Overwhelmed

Overwhelm is not a character flaw. It is the mathematics of input outpacing your mind's ability to process it.

You feel overwhelmed because information is entering your mind faster than your mind can process it. That is the whole mechanism. It is not a weakness in you. It is arithmetic.

The subconscious is a storehouse. Everything you take in — every conversation, every headline, every scroll through your phone — gets deposited there. Your ability to reason, to process information and produce clear outputs, is a derivative of how well that storehouse is organized.

In this conversation I use the analogy of a library. When I was growing up and wanted information, I went to my school library, looked at the index, and found the book — that shelf, that row, that floor. Because the library was organized, I could extract what I needed. A cluttered subconscious is a library with no indexing system. You could have a hundred thousand books in there. The outcome is confusion.

“If my rate of organization is twenty books a day but I am putting a thousand books in, it causes overwhelm — and then anxiety and stress. And that is where people are today.”

The rate of input has become far greater than the rate of processing. The result is confusion, and confusion is the end of reason.

In this teaching

  • Why the subconscious is a warehouse of everything that has made you who you are today — the helpful and the unhelpful alike.
  • How the rate of information entering your mind, not the information itself, creates overwhelm, anxiety, and stress.
  • Why you should never abandon reason — especially on the spiritual path, where anyone teaching you should be able to articulate the goal, the path, the practices, and the reason behind them.

Watch the conversation above. Then look at what you are letting into your library each day, and at what rate. Reduce the input. Organize what is already on the shelves.
